FUTURIST / ECOCENTRIST

MAKING THE FUTURE GREAT AGAIN.

400 BILLION DECISIONS

We’re heading for a future that few seem to want but most feel helpless to change. Resigned to the idea that it’s best left to the professionals we’re faced with a choice between mindless optimism and bleak despair.

Societies around the world are suffering, not from futureshock but from a collective sense of moral injury that our job is no longer to build the future, it’s just to buy it.

Futurist K D Adamson refuses to accept that. A polymath with a genius-level IQ and a very low threshold for BS, she proves how comprehensively the future has been hi-jacked, and how we can make it great again: by facing uncomfortable truths about the past, challenging our assumptions about the present, and realising that things are both infinitely more complex and vastly more straightforward than the people running the world want us to believe.

Because the future is actually 400 billion daily decisions, and we get to make them – rich and poor, young and old, parents and children, employees and employers. Between small acts of defiance, informed choices and the courage to live the values we care about, we hold the power. To shape a world in flux, rescue our collective future, and make it great again, for everyone.

THE FUTURE OF BUSINESS

LEADING BEYOND
CONTROL

The stable and predictable world order of the past eight decades underpinned by neoliberal globalisation has come to an end, leaving global business in flux. K D Adamson explains why and how we are transitioning into a new era: of moralism, metamercantilism and meatspace marked by multipolar ‘great power’ expansionism and competition.

Countries prioritising access to critical inputs and resources made scarcer by climate change are pivoting to autarky and digital sovereignty, exposing deep vulnerabilities in the complex and highly-optimised global business model which undermine national resilience and exacerbate political and social tensions.

Alongside wider security and defence considerations, an increase in supply-chain warfare and nation-state sponsored cyber-attacks governments are being forced into a more nuanced view of the role and value of business, one that goes beyond tax receipts and investment and recognises its latent power as an extension and instrument of the nation state.

The swiftness with which core certainties are being dismantled means there is an urgent need for businesses to understand and map the contours and implications of this dynamic emerging landscape. The traditional growth and competitiveness playbooks based around free-market command and control are no longer useful, in fact reliance on them and the assumptions implicit in them is a huge risk.

Leaders face a defining challenge: how to lead beyond control. Doing so means revisiting assumptions, reframing, retooling, reassuring and reinventing the way that businesses and their wider ecosystems create value in a changed world.
